Kerala driving licence smart card online; Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday launched PVC PET-G smart card driving licences that come with seven security features including QR code and hot-stamped hologram. The government will bring out smart registration certificate cards for vehicles by May. Driving licence holders will be able to apply for smart cards at a cost of ₹200 (excluding postal charge) during the first year of the reform. The duplicate card will then cost ₹1,200 (excluding postal charge).

The driving licence holders, who currently have laminated driving licence can convert their licence to new smart cards by spending Rs 200 and postal charges. Minister for Transport Antony Raju said that these PETG cards designed in the model of ATM cards are highly secured and could not be tampered with.

For applying for the smart licence, the licence holders are not required to submit their old licence cards. The application can be submitted through the Parivahan portal and the relaxation in charge will be available only this year. After this period, Rs 1200 and postal charges have to be paid. The vehicle registration certificate will also be converted into PETG cards from May 1.

The smart cards will have a unique identification number, a pattern visible only under ultraviolet light, a guilloche pattern (similar to those in currencies), a borderline with micro letters, a hologram, India’s image that changes its colour with the light, and a QR code.

The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) is now gearing up to roll out PVC PET-G cards for registration certificates (RC) too similar to smart card driving licences. As per reports, the RC cards will be printed and manufactured at the centralised unit in Thevara, where driving licences are printed in the state. One can convert their current registration certificates to smart card versions by paying Rs 200 and additional postal charges.

Eligibility Criteria for a DL:

If you want an SCDL for a two-wheeler with gear with an engine capacity greater than 50cc, then you must be at least 18 years of age.

In case of a non-geared two-wheeler, the minimum age limit is 16 years along with a letter of consent from the parents.

For cars, the age limit is 18 years.
