Facebook Surround 360 - 3D-360 video capture system

Facebook Surround 360 - 3D-360 video capture system

Facebook at its recently F8 developer conference, made clear that besides social networking, it is also focusing in the virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) fields as well. Adding to a slew of AR and VR-related announcements, the company introduced the new 'Surround 360' series of cameras - X6 and X24.

The new spherical-shaped cameras with multiple lenses allow users to produce high quality videos in VR. As their names suggest, the X6 has 6 lenses and the X24 comes with 24 lenses. The new camera technology lets you move around within the video scene and experience the content from different viewing angles. This means you can move your head around in the world and see it from different angles -- what's known as six degrees of freedom (6DoF) -- bringing the feeling of immersion and depth to a whole new level

Facebook doesn't plan on selling the cameras themselves. Instead, Facebook plans to license the x24 and x6 designs to a "select group of commercial partners." Still, the versions you see in the images here were prototype in Facebook's on-site hardware lab using off-the-shelf components. The x24 was made in partnership with FLIR, a company mostly known for its thermal imaging cameras, while the x6 prototype was made entirely in-house.
